Introduction

Earlier, the Ministry of Labour and Employment (“Ministry”) had released a press note dated April 03rd, 2023 wherein, the Ministry had undertaken several measures to increase registration facilities to unorganized workers by way of introducing common services centres at village level, organizing registration camps and drives, integrating E-Shram portal with Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (“UMANG”) mobile application, etc.

Recently, our Hon’ble Union minister for Labour and Employment and Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has released a press note dated April 24th, 2023, wherein, the Ministry has launched a more user-friendly version of E-Shram portal to enhance utility of the portal and facilitate ease of registration for unorganized workers.

Key Developments

The following are some of the new features being introduced by the Ministry in E-Shram portal:

  • Allowing E-Shram registered workers with increased employment opportunities, skill development programs, apprenticeship opportunities, digital skilling and states schemes via E-Shram portal.
  • Capturing family details of the migrant workers to provide child education and women centric schemes to such migrant workers who have migrated with their families to other states.
  • Sharing data of construction workers registering on E-Shram portal with the concerned Building and Other Construction Workers (“BOCW”) Welfare Board to ensure their registration and access to the schemes meant for them.
  • Launched Data Sharing Portal (“DSP”) for sharing E-Shram data with the respective State Governments and Union Territories for targeted implementation of social security/welfare schemes for the unorganized workers registered on E-Shram portal.

Conclusion

It is interesting to note that the Ministry is continuously working towards improving the life and dignity of labour force of country by protecting & safeguarding the interest of workers and aims at providing social security benefits to the labour force working in both the organized and the unorganized sectors. Such progressive steps by the Ministry seems to align with the vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister who is working day and night towards the welfare of our nation-builders thereby, ensuring that the unorganized workers are not deprived of such benefits and schemes which are meant for their very protection and upliftment.
